Edward Woods Sr.

Edward Woods, Sr., 94, of Benton Harbor passed away at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014. His celebration service will be held at Noon on Monday, Dec. 22, at the Highland Ave. Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2075 Highland Ave in Benton Harbor. The visitation will be held from 4 PM to 6 PM on Sunday at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Harbor and from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Church on Monday. Burial will be at Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Memorial contributions can be made to the Highland Avenue Community Service/Mission. Please share memories, messages or photos at www.florin.net. Edward was born to Alexander and Ella Woods on June 27, 1920 in Marion, AL. He united in marriage in 1941 with Lillie Ann Lee and she preceded him in death in 2003. Together they celebrated 62 years of marriage. He retired on June 12, 1978 after working at Superior Steel for thirty eight years. His remaining years were spent growing and selling produce from his farm. He particularly enjoyed selling his produce at the Farmer’s Market in association with the Berrien County Health Department. Edward loved his church and its mission. He, along with others, was instrumental in establishing the Regional Seventh-Day Adventist work in Benton Harbor. He often extended an invitation to those in the community to visit his church. He is survived by his children: Peggy (Scott) Hunter, Justin TX, Eddie (Daniel) Akande, Silver Springs, MD, Elizabeth Woods, Benton Harbor, and Edward (Edith) Woods, Jr., Berrien Springs; and his loving grands: Christopher (Pam) Hunter, Frisco, TX, Stanford (Nina) Hunter, Addison, TX, Edward (Donnarie) Woods III, Grand Ledge, MI, David Hunter, Seattle, WA, Brian (Gina) Woods, Cordova, TN, Edwin Akande, Huntsville, AL, Trishonda Woods, Berrien Springs, Jolayemi (Kabelo) Mochoge, Lindley, South Africa and Rike Akande, Silver Springs, MD. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, special friends, Brook, Brooklyn, Jean and Don, and many family members and friends. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brothers: Nathaniel Woods, Sr, Richard Woods, Alexander Woods, Jr., and Emmanuel Woods; and his sisters: Sally McCreaven, Bessie Brogan, Mary Cutts, Ella Lee and Rosa Thomas.
