Franklin D. Calhoun, 84, of Benton Township died Monday, January 6, 2025, at the Corewell Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. A time of family and friends’ reflections and memories will be held at Noon of Tuesday, January 14, at the Fairplain Chapel. The visitation will be from 11 A.M. until Noon on Tuesday at the Fairplain Chapel. . Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation in his memory. Please share memories or messages at www.florin.net. On July 18, 1940, Franklin Delno Calhoun, known by his friends and family as “Big Time Cal”, graced this earth, born to the loving union of Anderson and Essie Calhoun in Brighton, TN. The family later moved to St. Louis, MO, where he attended grade school. They eventually settled in Covert, MI where he attended the Covert area schools. He was a gifted athlete who excelled in basketball, ping-pong, and other sports. During his school years, he was offered a college basketball scholarship but chose to enter the workforce instead. His love for sports remained a constant throughout his life, and he could often be found cheering on the next basketball or football game or enjoying a good boxing match. Franklin was a kind- hearted man who brought joy to others through his sense of humor, warm personality, and love for spending time with family and friends. Whether he was fishing, shooting pool, playing cards, or watching a game, he found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Known as the family’s chef, he took pride in cooking meals with love, always making sure everyone was well fed. Above all, he prioritized his family, showing his devotion as a husband, father, and loyal friend. He was a kind man who always “had your back”. If something needed to be fixed, he preferred to handle it himself rather than ask for help. He stood by those he cared for through thick and thin, offering words of wisdom and encouragement when they were needed most. Professionally, he worked at Auto Specialties and later at Acosta, a job he truly enjoyed. He also pursued self- employment, finding pride and fulfilment. Franklin leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering loyalty that will forever life the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Lois Glaspy-Calhoun, and his son, Zavair (Sabrina) Glaspy, of Battle Creek, MI. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Gloria Calhoun, and his daughters, DeLinda Butler of Benton Harbor, Darnette Pay; Junanne Noble, and Felice Isom, all of Indianapolis, IN. Additional daughters include: Almeda Rush, Amanda Rush, LeKeyanna Williams, and Tammy Fuse, all of Benton Harbor, Yolonda “Lis” Bogan of Kansas City, MO, and Alicia “Lisa” Jones of Grand Rapids. His sons include; Vern McKenzie and Terrence (Kimberly) McKenzie, both of Grand Rapids, Jonathan (Chrystal) Guyton of Louisville, Ky., Darren (Trisha) Taylor of CA, Timothy Fuse of Benton Harbor, and Raymond “Earl” Ben of IL. He also leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law: James (Catherine) Bell and Brian (Pamela) Williams, ; Helen, Jean, and Sandra Calhoun, as well as June Hill, Audrey Walker, and Janice Hamilton. Franklin also was blessed with 35 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren, 2 grand pups, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; Anderson and Essie Calhoun; his brothers, John Anderson Calhoun and William Earl Calhoun, and his daughters, Kattura Ogburn and Joni Rudley, his nephew William Earl Calhoun, Jr. and niece Leslie Calhoun.
