Gene Calvin Snyder Sr.

Coloma – Gene Calvin Snyder, Sr., 75, of Coloma, passed away early Saturday, January 26, 2013, Tender Care of Westwood, in Kalamazoo. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, January 31, 2013, at the First Assembly of God Church, 3084 Niles Road, in St. Joseph, with Pastor Dan Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Coloma Cemetery. Visitation will be heldWednesday, January 30, from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M., at the Davidson Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, 249 E. Center Street in Coloma. Gene was born April 6, 1937 in Holgate, Ohio. He was the third child and only son born to Donald and Mildred Snyder. Gene graduated from Holgate (OH) High School in 1955 and from Bowling Green State University with a BS in Education including a Math Major and a General Science Minor. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. Gene retired from the Whirlpool Corporation after nearly 29 years service in their Information Technology Department. A long-time member of the First Assembly of God Church in St. Joseph, Gene served his church in various capacities including the Benton Harbor Street Ministry and the Mother’s of Preschoolers Program. Additionally he volunteered at the church as an usher and sang in the choir. He enjoyed reading about history and theology and doing latch-hook rugs. Gene’s “favorite hobby was spoiling his grandchildren as a ‘sacred’ duty of old age” and putting geological keepsakes together for his family. Gene is survived by his children, Gene (Lhen), Snyder, Jr. of O’Fallon, Illinois, Geoffrey Snyder of Dallas, Texas, Katrina (Gary) Atteberry of Schoolcraft, Michigan, Lance (Angela) Snyder of Harker Heights, Texas, Melissa Snyder of Bay City, Michigan, Derick (Jennifer) Snyder of Bothell, Washington, Susan (Tony) Serafin of Stevensville, John (Kim) Kerkemeyer of Granger, Indiana, Teri (Ed) Richcreek of Harford, and Kara Kerkemeyer of St. Joseph; 22 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Kay (Cliff) Raines of La Mesa, California; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce and her husband Richard Colwell; former wife, Sharon; second wife, Anita; his nephew, Clifford Raines, Junior; and by his niece, Christy Cae Myers.
