Mattie B. Thompson

Mattie B. Thompson, 75, of Benton Harbor, passed away Friday morning, October 18, 2013, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at the Second Baptist Church, 600 Donald Adkins Dr., in Benton Harbor, with Rev. Kenneth Gavin officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores. Visitation will be held form 10:00 until the time of the service, Tuesday, at the church. Memorials may be made to the church to support scholarships for special needs children. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service. Messages of condolence may be sent towww.florin.net. Mattie was born January 17, 1938 in Marvel, Arkansas to Cleveland and Veola Hull. Mattie was a long-time member of the Second Baptist Church of Benton Harbor and was active in the Nurse’s Guild and worked in the kitchen at the church. Mattie helped charter the Home Coming Committee of Benton Harbor in the early 1990’s. She enjoyed reading cook books, cooking, as well as dining out, talking on the phone with old friends, playing softball and traveling to see her many friends and family. Most of all, Mattie will be remembered for being hard working, very forgiving, extremely loving, caring, and emotionally strong. Mattie was a “faithful friend” with a “loving spirit” who spoke truth from the heart. Mattie is survived by her children, 3 sons and one daughter, Clarence Toby (Shirley) Washington of Benton Harbor, George Elliott (Lashon) Washington of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Kandi (Randy) Grandberry of Benton Harbor, and Harvey Lee Thompson, III of Benton Harbor; 3 children-through-love, James Ziggler of New Jersey, Joann Anderson of New Jersey, and Michael Anderson of Portage, Michigan; 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; sister, Cynthia N. Taylor of Benton Harbor; brother-in-law, Albert “Uncle Jed” Brew; sister-in-law, Betty Jean Hull; and by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.. In addition to her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; son, Marc Allen Washington; brothers L.C. and David Tony Hull; by her grandmother, Veora Taylor; and by her special uncle, Jerome Taylor.
