Doris was born on December 31, 1938 in Battle Creek, MI, one of four children to William Douglas Lacy, Sr. and Doris Louise (Franklin) Lacy. Her family moved to Benton Harbor, in 1942. Doris grew up and attended schools in Benton Harbor, starting at Seely McCord Grade School on up to graduation from Benton Harbor High School in 1956. Upon graduation from high school, Doris attended Benton Harbor Community College, now Lake Michigan College. After this, Doris began working for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. where she worked for nearly 20 years, later becoming Office Manager of Bibco Corp. in Benton Harbor until her retirement. Doris was baptized at the age of four in Union Memorial A.M.E. Church on Colfax and Bond Streets in Benton Harbor, where her parents joined after their move to Benton Harbor. During her youth, she attended Sunday school faithfully, ushered, sang in the youth choir and participated in many other local events and activities. She was a very loving and kind person and was especially fond of animals, faithfully feeding many stray cats, dogs and birds in her neighborhood.
