Nona Iona Blanton Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Nona I. Blanton, 88, of Benton Harbor died Sunday, August 19, 2012, at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 28, at 1:30 PM at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph, MI. Arrangements are by the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in St. Joseph. Please leave messages, memoires or photos at www.florin.net. Nona was born on December 12, 1923 in Caruthersville, MO to Ross and Mattie Steele. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Alfred H. Frazier and Arlett Blanton. Nona was a healthcare aid with Child and Family Services until she retired in 1977. Nona was active in community affairs including being Chairwoman of the Benton Harbor Crime Prevention Committee, Captain of her local Neighborhood Watch Block Club, the AARP, and the NCBA. She was also active in school affairs with the PTAs, Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts. Nona was a loving and caring mother who always put her family first. She is survived by her children, Alfred H. (Deborah) Frazier, Jr. of Alexandria, VA, Brenda Massengale-Barnes of Benton Harbor, Clinton E. Frazier of Benton Harbor, Donna (Charles) Joseph of Queen Creek, AZ and Evelyn E. Powell of Burtonsville, MD; her brothers, Henry Long and Fonnie Steele; her sisters, Inez Chesir, Dorothy Ross, Angelyn (Luke) Atterberry, and Phyllis(Logan) Scaggs; her 9 grandchildren; her eight great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Nona was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, Lonnie Steele, Walter Steele, Harris Steele, and Baby Roscoe Steele; and her 3 sisters, Wilma Gist, Ruby Shield, and Ernestine Certian.
