Wanda was born on March 10, 1929 in Benton Harbor to Earl (Long time City Clerk of Bento Harbor) and Ethel (Strome) Tidey. At age 12 she was baptized at First Christian Church of Benton Harbor. Her high school years were during World War II and she graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1946. During High School when she turned 16, she began working afternoons at the Farmers and Merchants National Bank in downtown Benton Harbor. After graduation the bank sent her to the IBM Business School in Chicago, where she was taught how to run newly developed large check sorting machines. She married her high school sweetheart, Vernon G. Ullig, on March 10, 1949 at St. Mathews Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor and he preceded her in death on Oct 3, 1996. She continued working as a teller at the bank until her first baby arrived. From then on, she was a stay at home mom and homemaker. In the boys grade school years, she was active in PTA, serving one year as hospitality chairman, then in the following years as a room mother and also as a Cub Scout Mother. Wanda was a family girl and her door was always open. She loved having parties and cookouts for her family and friends and celebrating special occasions at their home on the St. Joseph River. Two of these special events were Father’s Day and July 4th when the family always had a fish fry. During the summer family activities included fishing on Lake Michigan for perch, cleaning them and later having jet ski parties. She liked camping, fishing, boating, canning pickles and hunting for mushrooms. Their children and grandchildren enjoyed water skiing, jet skiing and snowmobiling. Wanda and her husband, Vernon, would also take their pontoon boat which was captained by their son, Kirt, up and down the St. Joseph River to the local marinas to play polka music. Her husband, Vernon, was well known for playing the saxophone in the polka bands, “The Spitzer Polka Band” and the “Lilly Pad Trio”. “Wow”. What fun that must have been. There was never a dull moment. In the fall Wanda and Vern would help their sons butcher the deer that they shot into steaks, roasts and hamburger. Finally Wanda told the boys that they were shooting more deer than they can handle that they should start butchering their own deer. It was a lot of work and the boys learned a good lesson. After the Christmas holidays, Wanda and Vernon would travel to mid-west Florida along the Gulf coast for 2-3 months where Wanda would be on the beach at first light to gather sea shells, sand dollars, and shark teeth. She also liked to garden and work in the yard. Later in life, she and her husband were into wildlife wood-working. Wanda and her husband would also scour the St. Joseph River for driftwood and Wanda would do her magic to get the driftwood ready for sale at the many arts and crafts shows around the State of Michigan which Wanda along with her daughter-in-law, Sharon, participated in for over 15 years. Her family includes her sons, Bradley (Gladys) Ullig, of Stevensville, and Kirt (Sharon) of St. Joseph; her daughter-in-law, Susan Ullig of Stevensville; her 8 grandchildren, Brent, Robert, Christopher, Brian, Scott, Jeffrey, Bethany and Elizabeth, and her 8 great-grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were her parents, her son, Vernon R. in 1993, and her brother Robert Tidey in 2012.
